The night was gradually fading away but there was still some moonlight left to illuminate the long stretch of highway for Angela. She lost track of how long she had been walking on the side of that road but she was aware it was going to be another couple of hours before she reached anything remotely populated. She stepped on a pebble with her bare feet and winced. She couldn’t wait to get off her feet and lay in a bed for days. Angela started thinking about work and how she was probably fired by now. Her boyfriend was in Vegas all week long. Did he even bother calling her, she thought. Doesn’t matter. The phone was the first thing to go anyways. A new dawn was approaching as the road lit up more and more from the sun coming up behind her. Angela didn’t think things would be the same after everything that happened, but it’s still too early to tell. She just needed to focus on walking that empty road. She could hear a few birds off in the distance, but it was the bugs that held her attention all night with their distorted melodies. Morning was finally here. The air was still cool, but it was going to heat up soon. Angela could now see that she was covered in more dried up blood than she had previously thought. It’ll definitely get someone’s attention if they come driving past her. Angela kept on, ignoring the pain emitting from her wounds, and started humming that same eerie tune that he hummed to her.
