The woman jolted up from the ground and began gasping for air. She couldn’t see around her in the darkness, save for some of the brightly lit night sky seeping into whatever hole she found herself in. She brushed her hands through the dirt around her on the ground, hoping to find anything that could provide her some light. Nothing. She felt something in her back pocket, which she pulled out to reveal a cell phone. Was it hers, she thought. Her memory was fuzzy and body still short of breath. She couldn’t remember how she wound up in that cave. She turned on the cell phone. It still had a little bit of battery left. Once the phone illuminated the cave, she let out a small gasp when she saw the noose around her neck. She gripped the rope and slid her hand along it to find the ripped end. The woman pulled the noose off to feel the indentions in her neck and hovered the phone to see the other end of the rope, ten feet above her head. The rope had been cut somehow and just in time. She hovered the light around the ground to see an opened pocket knife a few feet out of her reach. With the battery juice dwindling, the woman began to thumb through her text messages to find someone to call and help her. There was an unread text message sent by herself just a few hours earlier. She opened it up to read the text that would kickstart her memory and everything that led up to this point: “John did this”. It was clear to her as to what happened and what she needed to do next. Find John and kill him.
