The subway was crowded with people going in every direction as Thomas sat on the ground against the wall with begging cup in hand. He shook it a couple of times to let those around him hear the small amount of change that filled the cup but everyone was in their own universe, walking in and out of the trains. He sat there frustrated, trying to hold down the urge that had dormant inside of him for a few years now. A mother and her son walked by and placed a couple of dollars in his cup. He looked up at them and the mother smiled and said "Dios te bendiga." He mustered up a "Gracias" which was about the only spanish he knew, then looked at the small boy and said it to him as well. The boy smiled and turned around with his mother as they moved closer to the tracks to wait for the next train. Thomas looked inside the cup at the money and starting thinking about his mother. He wondered if she would remember him if he ever went back home. "Hey, watch it", he heard someone exclaim about 50 feet away amidst all of the noise in the subway. He looked down towards the noise to see another suit and tie running to catch his train with little disregard for everyone around him. Thomas closed the sound loop and went about his begging until the suit and tie pushed his way through people near him to be the first to get into the oncoming train. He pushed aside the mother and bumped the child with his briefcase, causing him to fall onto the tracks. The mother began screaming "Mijo, mijo" down to her son as the train came hurling towards him. Thomas jumped up from where he sat and let over everyone onto the train tracks. He had just enough time to hold onto the child as the train rammed into his back, causing the train to abruptly stop. Smoke bellowed from the front engine as everyone gathered around to see Thomas pulling himself out the indention he made to the train. The entire subway fell silent as he lifted the child up to his mother who kept repeating "Dios te bendiga." Thomas could feel all of their eyes on him. The urge was no longer a secret.
